Suriname is engaged into a national REDD+ readiness process. The country aims at getting ready to use the international REDD+ mechanism as a tool for sustainable development, combining social and economic prosperity with keeping a high percentage of forest cover and limiting deforestation in Suriname. The National Institute for Environment and Development in Suriname (NIMOS), on behalf of the Government of Suriname, is the National Technical Focal Point and coordinating body of the Suriname REDD+ Project.
CALL FOR CONSULTANCY
The National Institute for Environment and Development in Suriname (NIMOS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are engaged in the multi-year project Improving Environmental Management in the Mining Sector of Suriname, with Emphasis on Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (EMSAGS).

The EMSAGS project aims to improve environmental management in the mining sector of Suriname, with the emphasis on independent and small-scale gold mining as the biggest cause of deforestation in Suriname.
The project is funded by, among others, the GEF through the UNDP and implementation is partly in the hands of the Ministry of Natural Resources and NIMOS.
